Ships Mail

Mail posted at sea is normally handed over to the postal service at the first port the ship is calling at.  In Denmark, where Ships Mail was the only communication link with the Faroes, the Post Office in Kobenhavn adopted the specific name cancel Fra Færöerne instead of the usual Paquebot cancellation to indicate that the letter was posted at sea with the point of origin being the Faroe Islands.

Icelandic Issues with Fra Færöerne Markings
These stamps were on letters mailed in Iceland and sent by paquebot to Denmark via the Faroes.  Upon arrival in København mistakenly canceled Fra Færöerne instead of Fra Island.  Less than 20 instances reported in the literature.

Front and back of cover from Vaag to Kobenhaven via Leith, Scotland with two 5 øre stamps satisfying the first class international rate.  When received in Leith a PAQUEBOT cancel was applied, and the Danish stamps were canceled July 8, 1904, with a Leith c.d.s.  The arrival cancellation in Kobenhaven indicated that the cover arrived on July 11th, just 3 days later.  The letter was then sent onto Korsor where delivery was attempted, but could not be made.  The envelope was stamped with a boxed RETOUR and transit canceled with a July 21st. Kobenhaven c.d.s.  The envelope was then returned to the Faroes.
